Boston Escorts: More step forward in escort case

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

A 35-year-old Brockton man is facing armed robbery and other charges after he allegedly robbed two female escorts he met through the Craigslist website. Now, Brockton police say, investigators are looking at whether he had other victims.
Luther Mark Henderson was arrested Aug. 4 and accused of robbing two separate women at gunpoint, said Brockton police Captain Emanuel Gomes. Henderson is in custody after his arraignment on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, and intimidation of a witness in one case and armed robbery and kidnapping in the second case.
Gomes said that after Henderson’s arrest, police spread the word to see whether other victims came forward. Police said they knew some people working as escorts would be reluctant to speak up.
“We have had people come forward. We’re exploring allegations that are similar in nature,’’ Gomes said. “Those have been assigned out to detectives.’’

Boston Escorts: Markoff stabbed, suffocated himself

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Markoff, a native of upstate New York, died while awaiting trial on charges that he killed Brisman and attacked two other women in Boston and Warwick, R.I., in attempted robberies over a seven-day period in April last year.
He had met the women through ads in the erotic services category of Craigslist, authorities said.
Markoff, who was a second-year medical student at the time and living with his fiancee in Quincy, allegedly shot Brisman three times with a handgun on April 14 last year after they struggled fiercely in the doorway of her room on the 20th floor of the Marriott Copley Place hotel, authorities said.
The fatal shot pierced her heart.
Four days earlier, prosecutors said, he tied up Trisha Leffler, a 29-year-old prostitute from Las Vegas, at gunpoint at the Westin Copley Place hotel and stole her debit card, $800 in cash, and $250 in

Boston Escorts: Craigslist hooker robbed at gunpoint

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Brockton man used a Craigslist ad to lure a prostitute into a vacant home, rob her at gunpoint and force her to strip – leaving her to flee without a stitch of clothing, the woman told the Herald.
“I thought to myself: ‘I’m about to die right here,’ ” the Boston woman said yesterday, recounting her night of horror. “ ‘I said ’I have a kid. I have a child.’ . . . He’s like , ‘Gimme your car keys.’ ”
Luther Henderson, 35, was arrested for armed robbery, kidnapping and witness intimidation, according to Brockton police and court documents. He was held on $200,000 bail after his Aug. 5 arraignment in Brockton District Court.

Police are hoping to discourage prostitutes from advertising on Craigslist after the murder last year of Julissa Brisman, allegedly by suspected Craigslist killer Philip Markoff.

Boston Escorts: NH gun store cleared in sale of weapon Craigslist killer used

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Feith tells The Boston Globe that federal investigators in New Hampshire are no longer looking into the matter. Officials say Markoff committed suicide Sunday in his jail cell in Massachusetts.
A lawyer for the family of the masseuse, Julissa Brisman, blames State Line Gun Shop in Mason, N.H., for selling Markoff the gun in February 2009 without doing enough to verify his identity.
Authorities say Markoff used a driver’s license belonging to a New York state resident to buy the gun. Gun shop owner Paul Gauffin couldn’t be reached for comment on Tuesday.
YOUR COMMENTS
There are only two people who bear any responsibility in this woman’s death: the killer, and the woman herself, who chose to live the criminal life as a prostitute. Both are now dead, case closed.

Markoff’s dark secrets die too — Craigslist suspect’s suicide ends sad tale
BOSTON – When the world first saw Philip Markoff, frozen on surveillance footage, he was breezing through the lobby of a luxury hotel, nonchalantly tapping away on his cellphone. He looked nothing like anyone’s idea of a murder suspect.
But Markoff’s boy-next-door image masked a sordid, secret life, prosecutors said, a predatory existence in the seamy underworld of online prostitution, attacking and robbing women he met through Craigslist in apparent support of a gambling habit.
International attention branded the medical school student as the Craigslist killer.
Sunday, almost exactly one year after his scheduled wedding day, his life came to a wretched end in a jail cell. Any hope of learning more about the dark impulses that had allegedly led Markoff to rob and kill died with him.

Boston Escorts: Craigslist Killer Found Dead in His Cell – Craigslist Can’t Catch a Break

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

You want to talk about a bad week? I’d say that prostitution, murder and suicide can pretty much sum up a worst case scenario when it comes to a PR nightmare. Welcome to what Craigslist.com, a popular online classifieds service, is waking up to today. On this past Sunday Phillip Markoff, dubbed the ‘Craigslist Killer,’ committed what was by all accounts a suicide in his jail cell. The Boston University medical student donned the nickname after going on an alleged murderous crime and gambling spree earlier this year. Markoff was currently being held on charges stemming from the April 14, 2009 fatal shooting, and attempted robbery of Julissa Brisman, 25, at Boston’s Copley Marriot Hotel. Police reports said that Brisman, a model, advertised herself as a masseuse on Craigslist, and the hotel is where Markoff is believed to have met her.

Boston Escorts: Harvard DJ uses ‘hip-hope’ to preach social change

Harvard DJ uses ‘hip-hope’ to preach social change
AMBRIDGE — Christopher Hope has heard all the criticism about hip-hop: It’s angry, it’s degrading toward women, it glorifies drug pushing, pimping and partying.
The 27-year-old Harvard Divinity School graduate student doesn’t deny that those elements exist in his favorite musical genre. But the Atlanta transplant believes those aren’t the only themes in modern hip-hop. Some of the music, he said, seeks to promote social change and spread the Gospel.
To prove his point, Hope hosts a one-hour, Saturday evening show called “Hip Hope” radio on Harvard University’s WHRB 95.3 FM, where he plays contemporary rap music along with a sub-genre he calls “gospel hip-hop.”
Hope said he uses the show as a way to introduce fans of traditional urban music to a hip-hop with Christian themes. Listeners are exposed to gospel hip-hop songs that have messages about social activism and social change, he said.

Boston Escorts: Alleged hit-run driver busted twice at hotels

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Yesterday, she was ordered to appear at an Oct. 5 hearing in Boston Municipal Court in regard to her prior prostitution arrests.
On Dec. 10, an undercover Boston cop investigating a complaint about a hotel hooker called a number listed in an ad in the escort section of eros.com under the name “VIP Sasha,” records show.
The officer met Cunard at the Park Plaza Hotel, where they negotiated 30 minutes of what she allegedly described as girlfriend experience for $250.
Less than five weeks later, another undercover cop called the same number in a backpage.com ad and Cunard allegedly arranged to meet him at the Hyatt. Dressed in black high heels and a black negligee, she told the officer she charged $350 per hour, according to court records.
When she was arrested, Cunard allegedly said she was “self-employed” and did not have a pimp.

Boston Escorts: Q&A: Nikky Singh

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The tour changed me so much. It really opened my eyes. I teach a course on South Asian women writers, and I talk about authors and film directors who’ve made films about the slums in Mumbai or the red light district there. Going to see that had a profound impression on me. To hear the women there tell their stories, firsthand. It was so sad to hear how they’ve lost their womanhood; they’ve lost their lives. But there’s hope, too. They are fighting for a better life, and there are groups like the Among Women tours going and learning from and about these women, learning how to help. That’s what I’m bringing back to my classrooms. The hope. You can read about women in these slums, in the red light district, about how they’ve lost their identity, but to go and see how people are changing and the hope and the smiles that exist, it’s really reassuring. You see the worst, but also the best.
