Boston Escorts: State Police endured own arrest woes in 2011

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

In addition to the trooper facing federal charges amid allegations that he was a bookmaker, several members of the Massachusetts State Police have found themselves in trouble over the last year, including a State Police captain accused of turning on his car’s blue lights when a Saugus officer tried to pull him over and a trooper accused of cavorting with a prostitute in his police vehicle.
The arraignment of State Police Captain Thomas McCarthy, 47, of Stoneham, who was cited in November on traffic offenses, was postponed last month as prosecutors seek additional charges of operating under the influence of alcohol.

In December, Trooper Efrain Montanez, 50, of Salem, pleaded not guilty to engaging in unnatural acts, failure to stop for police, a stop sign violation, and assault with a dangerous weapon after being accused of engaging in a sexual act with a prostitute in his unmarked cruiser and then trying to flee the scene.

There are about 8,000 students at Bentley and Brandeis, he said. And although Bentley has a shuttle to Harvard Square, there isn’t one to downtown Waltham, a detail that is highlighted in the report.
Hadlock said his honors class initially considered expanding on a previous study of Moody Street, but after consulting with others in the city decided to take a larger look at the downtown area.
The resulting report also found that the perception of crime is another big issue for college students as well as the general public.
Crime in Waltham is relatively low compared with the US average, according to the report. Even so, crime has gone up in the city since 2005.
Prostitution is a problem in downtown, according to the report, and has worsened in recent years. The Internet has made it easier for women to run their own prostitution businesses, and the high concentration of hotel rooms in Waltham has contributed too, the report found.

Boston Escorts: Mass. state police commander urges crackdown

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

BOSTON—The commander of the Massachusetts State Police is promising closer scrutiny of troopers following several high-profile arrests in the past few months.
Col. Marian McGovern says she and other top officers have been meeting frequently recently in an effort to understand why so many troopers have been accused of breaking the law.
One trooper is facing federal charges for allegedly threatening to kill a bookie who owed him money. Another trooper is accused of fleeing from local police after soliciting a prostitute, and one possibly faces drunken driving charges after driving away from a traffic stop.
McGovern tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/yxU0×3) that within the next few weeks, the department expects to launch an electronic monitoring system that will automatically flag troopers who are showing consistent signs of poor behavior.
