… I’ve always thought Quincy was a great place,” Merrill said. “I’m always surprised it hasn’t taken off sooner.”
For much of the mid-20th century, Quincy was nicknamed Shopperstown USA because of its thriving retail scene anchored by old-line department stores such as Remick’s, Gilchrist’s and Raymond’s.
Indoor malls such as Braintree’s South Shore Plaza, which was built in the early 1960s and enlarged several times into its present-day 1.6-million-square-foot footprint, drew shoppers away and relegated Quincy Center to a new era as the home of no-frills independent shops, dimly lit saloons and service businesses.
“It’s sort of like a revolving door,” said McWilliams, the Quincy architect. “There are all these storefronts and restaurants that survive for a year and then it’s the next year and the next nail salon, the next massage parlor or the next Irish restaurant.”

DANVERS — Two women arrested last month on prostitution charges after police raided a Route 1 massage parlor pleaded not guilty during their arraignments yesterday.

Friday, December 23rd, 2011Two women working at the Newbury Body Work massage parlor were arrested Friday night, December 16, and charged with offering more than just a massage.
Xiaoping Wan, 48, of Charlestown, and Quinfei Chan, 48, of Malden were arrested at the location on Route 1, on the Danvers/Topsfield line. The two are charged with offering sex for a fee and deriving support from prostitution.
Bettencourt said that beginning in September, the Danvers police began getting anonymous tips and complaints from neighbors who were suspicious of the kinds of services being offered. This led to surveillance that included researching Craigslist postings for offerings and ultimately on Friday the Danvers police sent in an undercover person to the parlor. Qinfei Chan, 48, of Malden, and Xiaoping Wan, 48, of Charlestown, are facing charges of sexual conduct for a fee and deriving support from prostitution after an undercover police officer went to the Newbury Bodywork spa, which has also been known as the Asian Wellness spa.
The officer, who had been to the business once before, had arranged an appointment for 4:30.
During the massage, the undercover officer “did the customary flip,” which, Detective Timothy Williamson explained in his report, is usually a signal in illicit massage parlors that the customer wants something “extra.”
