PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Suicides in jail aren’t uncommon — but rarely do they involve such high-profile inmates as Craigslist killing suspect Philip Markoff.
Now the family of the woman he was accused of murdering is left yearning for justice, while the public remains captivated by the fit-for-Hollywood story of a medical student accused of soliciting a masseuse on Craigslist and shooting her dead during a botched robbery scheme in a posh Boston hotel.

Authorities charged him in two other attacks — including the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman at another Boston hotel and the assault of a stripper inside a Rhode Island hotel where authorities found his fingerprints on the wall. The three crimes occurred within a week.

Boston Strip Clubs: Craigslist suspect’s suicide riles victim’s family

Markoff was arrested in April 2009 on charges of binding, beating and shooting the 26-year-old Brisman with a gun that prosecutors say he later stashed in a hollowed-out anatomy textbook. He became instant tabloid fodder and a cover story in People magazine.
“It has sex, it has enigma, it has the story of a respectable, smart, success-oriented, helpful young man who, without warning, becomes a killer, and that is why people pay attention to it,” said Jack Levin, a professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University in Boston who has written books on murder.

Boston Strip Clubs: ‘Craigslist Killer’ death details

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Markoff was charged in the April 2009 fatal shooting of Julissa Brisman, 26, of New York City, and the armed robbery of Trisha Leffler, a 29-year-old Las Vegas prostitute, both at Boston hotels. Authorities say he used anonymous e-mail addresses and pre-paid cell phones to set up meetings with the women he met through Craigslist, where they had advertised in its “erotic services” category.
The Boston Police Department crime lab identified two blood stains taken from swabs on a handgun that was seized during a search of Markoff’s apartment in Quincy, said prosecutors, who alleged Markoff used the weapon to bludgeon Brisman before she was shot three times at close range.
Investigators also found several other items in the apartment, including four pairs of women’s underwear wrapped inside socks and hidden in a box spring, authorities said.
Markoff had plead not guilty. He was also charged in an alleged attack on a stripper in Warwick, R.I. He was put on suicide watch this past May after trying to commit suicide with a pair of shoelaces. He was scheduled to stand trial in March 2011.

Boston Strip Clubs: Reports: Accused Craigslist Killer Suffocated Himself

Monday, August 16th, 2010

According to ABC News, panties that belonged to the two Boston victims, as well as a handgun, were found hidden in a copy of the medical textbook ‘Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body’ in Markoff’s apartment. The book was hollowed out. It’s a common medical reference and runs more than 1,200 pages, depending on the edition. A collector’s edition is pictured above.
A police source said fingerprints link Markoff to a third attack, which took place April 16, 2009, at the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, R.I. In that case, a stripper said she was held at gunpoint by a man she met through Craigslist. The attacker fled when her husband arrived. Authorities believe this surveillance video from the hotel shows Markoff, who has been accused in a separate Rhode Island warrant in that case.

Boston Strip Clubs: Accused Craigslist killer commits suicide

Monday, August 16th, 2010

City Councilor Stephen Murphy said Monday that Philip Markoff should not have been able to kill himself while in custody of the Suffolk County sheriff. Markoff was discovered dead in his cell Sunday morning. Authorities say an  investigation will be conducted to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death.
Boston Police and the Suffolk County district attorney are investigating whether Markoff committed suicide. But Murphy wants them also to probe procedures at the Nashua Street jail.
An attorney for the family of victim Julissa Brisman says Markoff’s death prevents a long-awaited opportunity to confront him and hear the details of Brisman’s final moments.
The former Boston University medical student had been placed on a suicide watch at the jail following his arrest in April 2009.
Markoff had pleaded not guilty in the fatal shooting of New York City resident Julissa Brisman and the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman. Rhode Island prosecutors had accused him of attacking a stripper.
