Published: April 25, 2012
BOSTON — The man federal authorities say was the acting head of the New England mob was arrested here Wednesday morning, and in a federal court appearance in Providence, R.I., later in the day pleaded not guilty to multiple counts including racketeering and conspiracy.
In a colorful indictment returned Tuesday and unsealed Wednesday, federal prosecutors allege that the man, Anthony DiNunzio, 53, became the acting boss of New England’s Cosa Nostra crime family in late 2009 and oversaw the organization’s extortion of Rhode Island strip clubs and other such businesses, demanding payments of $2,000 to $6,000 per month.
“Our indictment alleges that Mr. DiNunzio was an unscrupulous and intimidating leader of the New England L.C.N.,” said James Trusty, the head of the Justice Department’s organized crime unit, during a news conference.

Boston Strip Clubs: ‘Cheeseman?s’ brother facing mob charges

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Anthony DiNunzio’s arrest comes as part of a years-long investigation by the Providence office of the FBI.
That investigation, which includes allegations of shakedowns of Rhode Island strip clubs, where the clubs allegedly paid protection money to the Mafia to stay in business, has already resulted in a guilty plea from former New England mob boss Luigi “Baby Shanks” Manocchio.
FOX Undercover’s camera was recording outside an East Boston restaurant – Carmen’s Kitchen, named for Carmen DiNunzio — in 2009 when Anthony DiNunzio met with other reputed mobsters. The FBI says in court papers that DiNunzio was there talking about “the distribution of proceeds from the extortion of the Rhode Island strip clubs” and how that money would now be coming to Boston, where the Mafia leadership had transferred from Rhode Island.

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Associated Press PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – An investigation into the alleged shakedown of Providence strip clubs left the New England mafia without its reputed leader Wednesday as authorities arrested Anthony L. DiNunzio on charges he oversaw the mob’s extortion of adult entertainment businesses and sought to broaden the crime operation’s influence. DiNunzio, 53, was arrested by authorities at a social club in the North End section of Boston on a federal indictment Tuesday, officials said. The indictment describes DiNunzio as the brutal acting leader of the New England branch of La Cosa Nostra who vowed to use violence on anyone who balked at his commands. “I get to watch you die in the ground … and I’ll dig you back up and make sure (you’re) dead,” DiNunzio is quoted as telling a senior made member of the Gambino crime family during a June 22 meeting last year at My Cousin Vinny’s restaurant in Malden, Mass. Boston Strip Clubs: Anthony DiNunzio, the alleged leader of the New England mob, facing …

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

According to the federal indictment, DiNunzio accepted both the title of boss of the New England mob and the thousands of dollars in extortion payments that Manocchio collected for decades from the strip clubs in Rhode Island. Authorities allege DiNunzio and other mob members collected $2 million over the years.
DiNunzio also reportedly bragged that if he is ever arrested, it would not change the way he, or the New England mob, operates.
“If I go to the can, I’m still the boss,’’ DiNunzio is quoted as saying during a Dec. 7, 2011, meeting with a member of the New York-based Gambino crime family.

Neronha’s office and the FBI have been investigating New England’s mobsters for the past several years with a focus on the alleged shakedown of Rhode Island strip club operators.

Boston Strip Clubs: Rep sees potential EBT debate Tuesday afternoon

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

While House Democrats determine which amendments hit the floor and when, Rep. Viriato DeMacedo (R-Plymouth) told a radio interviewer this morning that an anticipated House debate over welfare cash benefits would likely take place Tuesday afternoon, when the House resumes debate on its fiscal 2013 budget.
In an interview with Jeff Katz on WRKO, DeMacedo, the ranking Republican member of the House’s budget committee, said he anticipated a vote in favor of “tightening restrictions” on the use of welfare benefit cards, also known as electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards.
Those cards have drawn increased scrutiny after repeated reports of recipients using them for purposes deemed inappropriate – from posting bail to purchasing tattoos to spending at strip clubs. Last week, state and federal authorities conducted a widespread sting operation in Boston and Quincy targeting 53 individuals, including one store owner, for illegally conspiring to sell their EBT cards for cash.
