‘Dude, where’s my column?’
Because I’m not hearing it . . . unless I just happen to be standing next to Jeff Bridges or President Obama
Back in the ’90s, I blew off work one afternoon to go sit alone in a Quincy movie theater and watch the Pamela Anderson classic “Barb Wire.’’ (“Post-Apocalyptic remake of “Casablanca’’ set in a strip club’’ – IMDB.com.) Anderson plays a violent, quasi-libber bounty hunter who hates it when men call her a certain name.
“Don’t call me Babe!’’ is the movie’s oft-repeated tagline, uttered by Anderson-Wire just before she whomps the bejesus out of some male chauvinist thug.
My version: Don’t call me Dude.
It’s everywhere. When President Obama agreed to appear on Comedy Central during the 2010 electoral campaign, Jon Stewart called him “Dude’’ instead of the required “Mr. President.’’ Later, Obama said he didn’t mind: “As president, you’re called much worse than ‘Dude.’ ’’ This month political wannabe Joseph P. Kennedy III blew off a Herald reporter with the phrase, “Dude, I’m at work.’’ The Herald returned the favor with a Page One cover line: “Camelot He’s Not.’’

Late Thursday afternoon, an undercover detective was sent to the business to get a massage.
“The massage got to the point where it was indecent assault and battery,” and the detective was able to signal other nearby officers, who came into the parlor and made the arrests, Ratte said.
Jing Hui Liu, 28, of 10 Perkins Court, was charged with keeping a house of prostitution and sexual conduct for a fee.
Rong Chen, 43, also of 10 Perkins Court, was charged with sexual conduct for a fee and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.
The arrests occurred at 6:50 p.m. Officers obtained a search warrant and returned to the business about 10:32 p.m., police said.
A search of the premises turned up business cards and equipment “conducive to the massage and prostitution trades,” Ratte said.

South End Patch reports that Michael Hancock of Denver and Ken Menino of Boston agreed to a two-part wager for the team’s AFC divisional playoff game. The mayors will treat each other to a meal depending on the game’s result, with Menino getting a Colorado steak dinner and Hancock receiving New England lobster. There’s also a jersey component, and that’s where Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere comes into it.
If Denver wins, the statue of Revere in the city’s North End will don Tebow’s No. 15. If New England wins, Hancock has to wear a Tom Brady jersey at an upcoming function.
How is that an equitable bet? If the Broncos are victorious, they get to desecrate the memory of a civic hero. If the Patriots win, they get to put a Brady jersey on a guy who spent the days after his election fighting off allegations that he visited a brothel. I’m all about respecting the point spread in straight-up bets, but this is a bit much.
